The Pissu Sanniya Mask is a traditional Sri Lankan mask handcrafted from 100% Kaduru wood, skillfully carved and painted by local artisans. This mask, a part of the well-known Sanni Yakuma ritual, represents the demon associated with mental illness or madness . In the image, the mask features an exaggerated expression with bulging red-rimmed eyes, large tusk-like teeth, and a wide-open red mouth with a protruding tongue, all designed to vividly depict chaos and mental disturbance. The use of intense colors like fiery red, black, and vivid green symbolizes energy, heat, and spiritual force, echoing the ancient belief in the power of colors to influence human well-being.
Traditionally, the Pissu Sanniya Mask is not only used in exorcism and healing rituals but is also believed to bring protection and good fortune when displayed in homes or businesses. Passed down through generations, these masks hold a significant place in Sri Lankan culture, representing both spiritual defense and artistic heritage.
